Medical grade ozone is safe and effective. The use of ozone to treat medical disorders was first established in Germany in the 1950’s. It is a common treatment modality in Europe used to disinfect and treat many conditions and its use is growing in the USA.

What is Ozone Therapy?

We typically think of oxygen as part of the atmosphere around us, a molecule comprising two oxygen atoms. Treatments utilize medical oxygen by converting it to medical ozone with three oxygen atoms instead of the usual two in the air we breathe.  The extra oxygen atom is highly active and this stimulates your body to heal itself.

This extra oxygen atom makes it a “supercharged” version of oxygen and gives it the capability to do amazing things for your body. Medical grade O3 (Ozone) is both safe and effective. It’s use in treating medical disorders was first established in Germany in the 1950’s. It is a common treatment modality in Europe and its use is growing in the USA.

You may have heard the word ozone but you may not realize that it has incredible healing properties within our bodies.  If you have pain, dysfunction, an illness, a disease, or simply want to age better, ozone therapy is a wonderful option to look into.

It is a safe and effective therapeutic treatment that has been around for decades but is sadly underutilized in the USA. This is largely due to the fact that most people don’t know about it, most doctors are not trained in this particular form of therapy, and it is still not recognized as a payable service by insurances. The good news is that word is getting out – happy patients are helping to educate other people about it.

The Medical Use of Ozone Can Assist your Body in Fighting a Variety of Illnesses and Diseases:

O3 has been used effectively to reduce heart disease (new or recurrent), improve and even reverse autoimmune diseases (M.S., Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Lupus, etc),  treat TMJ, fight cancer, help with fibromyalgia, improve the body’s ability to fight infections (Shingles, Lyme disease, etc.), assist in detoxification, alleviate symptoms from interstitial cystitis, stimulate the healing of ligaments, muscles, and tendons, and so much more.

Ozone therapy is also an effective treatment to ensure you age gracefully. It can keep your body looking and feeling younger and healthier.

How does Ozone work?

Ozone therapy appears to enhance the blood flow and improves circulation.

The use of medical grade O3 appears to increase antioxidant production.

It also seems to balance out the immune system.  Imagine that your immune system is like a teeter totter— with too much resulting in an overactive immune system (i.e. autoimmune diseases) and with too little resulting in an underactive immune system (i.e. chronic infections).  Ozone can help modulate your immune system to correct and become balanced, allowing your body to successfully combat both autoimmune diseases and chronic infections. Treatments  also appear to enhance the function of the mitochondria – the powerhouses in every cell of the body.   Mitochondria are the source of the energy that powers the cells in your body.  O3 can essentially jump start these important organe

How Is Ozone Administered for Medical Uses?

Ozone therapy is administered by IV, rectal, bladder, vaginal, limb bag, or injection into a specific pain area. The type of treatment that is best for you and the frequencies you require depends upon what the treatment is for.

For example, for anti-aging purposes or cardiac health maintenance, monthly IV therapy is the optimal treatment. For interstitial cystitis, bladder ozone is given several times a week over a 4-8 week period. For shoulder pain, a localized injection is done 1-3 times spaced out 3 weeks apart. Basically, the method and frequency of ozone administration depends upon each person’s unique circumstance.

  • IV ozone is typically best for heart disease, autoimmune diseases, fighting chronic infections, detoxification, chronic fatigue, and anti-aging purposes.
  • Rectal ozone is typically best for gastrointestinal issues.
  • Bladder catheterization with Ozone: Great for alleviating the symptoms of interstitial cystitis or helping patients who suffer from repeated bladder infections.
  • Vaginal ozone is an option for women wanting systemic ozone therapy that are unable to do the IV treatments. It does require more frequent treatments for the same effect as the IV.
  • Limb bag ozone is for treating skin infections or concerns.
  • Injections of ozone (Prolozone) are done for TMJ, sinus problems, or musculoskeletal complaints (pain in the knee, shoulder, hip, back, etc)

What are the Different Ozone Therapies Available:

IV Blood Ozone therapy treatments are administered through an IV by a certified RN at the office in a comfortable IV room.   The patient sits comfortably in the IV chair that is like a lounge chair.  Blankets and pillows are available if needed.  An IV catheter is inserted into a vein and some of your blood is withdrawn into a sterile IV bag.  O3 is then inserted into the blood and the ozonated blood is then put back into your body from the same bag, keeping the procedure safe and sterile.  There is minimal, if any discomfort, with the insertion of the IV catheter.  The treatment takes about a half hour and can be combined with an IV Myers Cocktail and/or Glutathione for an additional immune boost.

Rectal Ozone therapy is administered through a sealed bag that can be administered at the office or taken home (but it needs to be used within 30 minutes).  The patient lays comfortably on his/her side and inserts a thin lubricated catheter a few inches into the rectum.  The patient squeezes on the bag to infuse the O3 into the rectum.   The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes.  There may be some slight bloating afterwards.  The patient is asked to hold off from using the bathroom for 5-10 minutes afterwards.  Typically this is done 5 days a week for 3 weeks.

Vaginal and limb bag Ozone therapy is done in the office.   You lay comfortably in a private setting while ozone is gently infused into the vagina or in a bag around your limb (arm/leg) for 15-20 minutes.

Bladder Ozone is administered by an RN in the office.  The patient is in a private room and a catheter is gently inserted into the bladder (by the RN) and a mixture of an anesthetic (prilocaine) and heparin is gently infused into the bladder.  After a 30 minute rest period, O3 is then gently infused into the bladder over a period of about 10-20 minutes.  Treatment frequencies depend upon the severity of your condition.

Prolozone is performed by the doctor, P.A., or NP. In the office.   A blend of vitamins and prilocaine are gently injected into the affected area of your body. O3 is then injected slowly into the area. See more detailed information on our prolozone page.

The bottom line is that ozone therapy is well tolerated and can be quite effective for a wide variety of ailments. Your body has an incredible system for healing itself. Sometimes this system gets a “hiccup” and disease, dysfunction and/or pain is the result. Ozone therapy uses natural ingredients to stimulate your body to heal itself–helping you to regain your life and get back to doing the things you enjoy doing.
