We all know that stress is not good for us and that it raises blood pressure, but did you know that stress can cause your sex hormones to be disrupted. Yes, that is right: stress can cause a hormonal imbalance. This means that stress can deplete your progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone levels in your body. Your body does this by utilizing cortisol (your stress hormone) to handle stress and when your body uses cortisol, it steals the building blocks that make up your sex hormones. This is often referred to as cortisol steal.
When your body has to make a lot of cortisol (due to you having a stress reaction) your body basically steals from the supply of building blocks that should be making progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. The end result is hormonal imbalance.
We live in a stressful world and you can not help that. But, you can change how you respond to what happens around you. Stress is a perception and you can change how you perceive events, and in turn, you can protect your body from having stress deplete your hormones.
Some simple things that you can do in order to minimize your stress response: turn off the news, avoid stress inducing events if possible, exercise, do yoga or meditate, take up a hobby, turn off your phone, etc. One simple thing that you can do daily is to take a deep breath in and then take 6 or 7 seconds to blow the breath out. Do this throughout your day.
