Pellets, or implants are made up of hormones (bio-dientical testosterone or estradiol) that are pressed into very small solid cylinders. The pellets are smaller than rabbit food but in similar shape. The pellets are made by a compounding pharmacy and delivered in sterile glass containers. Each batch made by the compounding pharmacy is tested to be sure that the pellets are of high quality and contain the correct amount of testosterone or estradiol.
Pellets are inserted into the fat in the upper outer area of your buttocks (near where the pockets of pants usually are) in a simple out patient procedure. The area is prepared with betadine and local anesthesia is given. The insertion for a woman takes only a few minutes and for a man about 10 minutes. It takes longer to explain the procedure and go over everything with the patient than it takes to insert the pellet.
Pellets deliver consistent levels of the hormones for 3 – 4 months in women and 4 – 5 months in men. Using pellets helps you to avoid the up/down spikes that other methods of hormone delivery are plagued with. The delivery of hormones through pellets most closely resembles what your body would naturally do with hormone secretion, and this is important for optimal health and disease prevention. Pellets do not have an increased risk of liver problems or blood clots: those are real risks when taking certain hormones orally.
In multiple studies, when pellets where compared to conventional hormone replacement therapy, pellets have been shown to be superior for relief of symptoms: these include energy levels, sleeping issues, mood fluctuations, libido (sex drive), building muscle mass, etc. The pellets have also been shown to be superior at building bone density and improvement of mental clarity, among other things.
